In ancient Chinese poem altar, five-character-ancient-verse poetry and seven-character-ancient-verse poetry are the dominant form of poem at that time. As the non-mainstream form, Six-character poetry, though not spread that widely, also shows its charm in different ways because of its unique flavor. As a type of poetry, it helps to enrich the verse form and broaden the verse realm of the poems. It also influences the poems, prose and songs of later times as well as Japanese Han Shi. It is regrettable that so far Six-character poetry was was also lonely and disposed of in almost none of the reach of a corner.Based on the collection of materials on the topic, the author analyses the origin, development in early days, mature and decline of six-character-ancient-verse poetry to show its history of development. By doing this, its importance and value are clearly shown. Since six-character poem experienced its setting, developing and mature in Tang and Song dynasty, the paper focuses the study mainly on the two dynasties.The thesis is composed of four chapters.Chapter 1 studies the origin and early development of six-character poetry. Zhi Yu (East Jin Dynasty), Liu Xie, Ren Fang (Nanchao Dynasty), Jiao Ran (Tang Dynasty), Yan Yu (Song Dynasty), Xie Zhen (Ming Dynasty), Zhao Yi (Qing Dynasty) has done research on the topic. In modern time, many researchers also put forward their views on the topic, such as, Wei Shaosheng, Tan Ruwei, Cao Changhe and Zhou Qianlong. Based on previous study, the author of the paper analyses different theories on the origin of six-character poetry, and concludes that the poem written by Kong Rong is the oldest and most formal and complete six-character poetry in existence. On the early development of six-character poetry, the author studies from the perspective of different literature styles and lists . the masterpieces of Cao, Ji Kang (Sanguo period), Lu Ji (West Jin), Yu Chan (East Jin), Xie Hui (Nanchao Dynasty) and Yuxin (Beizhou Dynasty). With all the literature styles included, their poems make great contribution to the forming and developing of six-character poem.Chapter 2, through two clues, the author details the transition of six-character poem from mature to achieving its summit. The horizontal aspect mainly discusses the poem from the point of literature style and form, while the vertical aspect summarizes the characteristics of six-character poem in different historical periods.Chapter 3, according to the discussion of preceding chapter, the author further summarizes the similarities and differences in six-character poetry of Tang and Song dynasties. It manifests the artistic feature of the genre of the poetry, and also serves as an innovation point of the paper. Then the author gives the reason why six-character-ancient-verse poetry cannot widely spread: both inside and outside reasons. On the one hand the natural development rules of ancient poems cause so, on the other hand it is the choice of the mainstream culture.Chapter 4, though not very attractive and prosperous in Chinese classic poetries, six-character poetry are actually widely applied in later prose and songs. Therefore this chapter analyzes its influences from vertical and horizontal aspects. In the vertical aspect, it greatly influences the songs and poems of later times; in the horizontal aspect, six-character poetry especially the poems by Wang Wei have tremendous influence on Japanese Han Shi. Many a Japanese Han Shi is the imitation of Chinese poems. This is another innovation point of the paper.In addition to analyzing the reason why six-character poems cannot spread widely, the author also collects some anthologies of the kind of poetry. These anthologies are very important for study because the literature records of six-character poetry are limited. Scholars of nowadays begin to pay more attention to six-character poetry and has compiled some anthologies. All these work has provided abundant materials for the present study.With the further study on six-character poetry, it will surely have greater progress. In all flowers blooming together, six-character poetry also shines extraordinarily in the literature world. It should be irrigated and cultivated to grow healthy, strong and show its own fragrance.
