With more and more contacts and opportunities between our country and many English-speaking countries, English has become much more important and a still higher demand has been set on English communicative competence. But in the practical English teaching, both teachers and students are still greatly influenced by the traditional teaching method. In class, the teacher is the dominator, trying to "sell" his knowledge to his students while the students become passive audience who have to sit there listening to the teacher and taking notes of what the teacher says just like mugs waiting to be filled with what is imparted by the teacher. As a result, the students have little opportunity to practice what they have learned, falling to improve their English communicative competence. Many students, especially those ,who have learned English for several years , know some English knowledge but have no ability to use English effectively in real communicative situation.According to the characteristics of the English courses and the cultivating target of HVC, it is necessary to improve the students' English communicative competence ,which is the ultimate goal of HVC English teaching. Nowadays, we English teachers face a great challenge to change the student' dumb situation in English learning and make them communicate with each other in correct and fluent English. This is a study of how to develop HVC students' English communicative competence, based on the survey of college English teaching in Sichuan Business and Vocational College. As a result ,the writer tries to present some effective strategies to solve the problems which exist in English teaching and learning and hopes to make contribution to the improvement of the students' English communicative competence..The dissertation includes 5 parts as follows: Part One elicits the reasons and importance of the topic, meanwhile states some relative research in China or abroad. and introduces the definitions of several key words. In Part Two the author , by means of questionnaires, makes an investigation on both teachers and students 'English communicative competence. Part Three points out the main problems in English teaching which arise from the following aspects: traditional teaching concepts, improper teaching materials, the teachers' lack of vocational background, a complete divorce between target language teaching and target culture teaching. Part Four dwells on the strategies in accordance with the problems: change the traditional teaching concept and focus on the students' communicative skills; cultivate the intercultural competence of the students by closely combining the language teaching with culture teaching and so on. The last part concludes the whole thesis and addresses its limitations and directs attention to areas for further study.
