John Fowles, who has been labeled as a"postmodernist"writer, is an important and influential novelist in contemporary Britain.Through an analysis of Fowles'two major novels of The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman, the author in this thesis tries to point out that mysticism is one of the major threads running through most of the works of John Fowles.This thesis falls into five parts.Part one serves as an introduction to educe the concept of mysticism. Part two introduces kinds of explanations to mysticism. Part three is an outline of mysticism's reflection in the history of European literature. Part four deals with mystery and mystification in the two novels of Fowles from five aspects. Part five analyses the reasons of the mysticism in Fowles'works. The last part draws a conclusion of the whole thesis.
