This paper exemplifies the feasibility and effects of using authentic materials in college English class by conducting experiments, surveys and observations in 172 grade-one non-English majors and provides a series of methods of using authentic materials through three sample lessons so as to bring some new insights into the ESL teaching research and practice. The study was conducted over a period of sixteen weeks and the 172 subjects were divided into the Control Group, Experimental Group A and Experimental Group B. Through the analysis of the observational, survey results and test results, the researcher discovers that there is an overall evident improvement in students' study enjoyableness, motivation and language competence in the experimental groups, while on the other hand, there is no obvious change in the Control Group.Meanwhile, the amount of authentic materials used also influences the progress of the subjects in enjoyableness, motivation and their achievements. This can be proved by the difference in students' improvement in enjoyableness, motivation and achievements between Experimental Group A and Experimental Group B, which is caused by the different amount of authentic materials used in the two groups.
