At the beginning of the new century, our education faces new challenge and new reform. Educators have focused on such subjects as what to learn, how to learn, and have promoted the effective learning methods to develop students' potential, creativity and practical abilities. And under this circumstance, research emerges to develop quality education, which aims at changing students' passive learning methods and developing students' creativity and practical abilities.Teachers of English try to achieve this in their own domain. Although there are several articles related to this issue, most of them are conclusions of experiences, so it is importance to study this subject in a more systemic way in both theory and practice.In this thesis, the author tries to apply the education theory of research-based learning and teaching to explore the related theory and operational method of developing research-based study of English. The aim of this study is to examine the exploring activities of students, thereby to improve the effectiveness for the given period of time; to explore different kinds of education activities, and encourage students' ability of practice and innovation; to try to change the concept of education, promote self-initiative of students.This thesis consists of seven parts.The first part makes a brief introduction to research-base learning and teaching,The second part reviews the historical literature.The third part analyzes research-based learning in English teaching and learning.The fourth part focuses on the necessity and possibility of conducting research-based learning in English classrooms.The fifth part illustrates problems in developing research-based learning in English classrooms..The sixth part analyzes strategies and methods of conducting research-based learning in English teaching. When discussing strategies and methods, the writer aims at applying research globally and microcosmically. The seventh part is a test carried out by the writer, with results and analysis.Research-based learning and teaching is a new teaching approach, which deserves proper study and practice in English teaching. Teachers of English should constantly update the knowledge and upgrade their professional skills.
