As an English metaphysical poet in the 17th century, Andrew Marvell plays a very important role in the development of English poetry, whose poetry indicates the transition from Renaissance to the Neoclassicism. This thesis focuses on the expression of his ideal, which is called as the Garden-state. Starting from the point of garden images and semantic conflicts, this thesis analyzes the complexity and rich background meaning of the garden images, so as to get the perception of Marvell's characteristic opinion of nature, region and ideal. This thesis has been divided into three parts, the first part illustrates Marvell's garden theme and his thought of Retirement; the second part analyzes Marvell's opinion of nature from the connection between garden images and colors; the third part reaches the conclusion of Marvell's ideal of the Garden-state, by using the soul of Platonism to analyze the deep thought and its triple metamorphosis in the Garden.
