Virginia Woolf is one of the greatest modern novelists in the 20th century. The complicated situation in the century has brought all thinkers of the time the task of pondering on human existential state. As a sensitive woman writer, Woolf has made an unremitting effort to pursue the essence of life, capture the moment of being and explore the inner world of human beings. Concurrently, Heidegger, the most prominent philosopher and Woolf's contemporary, launched his interrogation of "being". This thesis intends to interpret Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway on the ground of the thinking on the way to the authentic existence and their probing into the quintessence of life, death and great harmony of beings and the world, all these intensively manifested in the novel.
