The global economic integration and China's entry into WTO has exposed the Chinese people to the international business climate more closely. Most of the Chinese companies nowadays are competing with their business rivalries form all over the world, so the grasp of first-hand business information and management concepts seems to be essential for their business survival and thriving. Under this circumstance, the eager for the knowledge of business trend makes more and more businessmen and business school students begin to read original English newspapers and journals, especially business reviews, which tend to offer in-depth and comprehensive analysis and comments about economy and business. On the whole, more reading of business reviews helps the businessmen improve the efficiency of their corporate operations. In this thesis, with the guidance of Theme, Rheme and Thematic Progression, the author attempts to conduct a contrastive study on a corpus of English and Chinese business reviews. Fifteen English texts and fifteen Chinese texts have been chosen at random from Harvard Business Review and Bei Da Shang Ye Ping Lun (Peiking University Business Review) from 2006 to 2007 for comparison and analysis. Moreover, the author has generalized 7 patterns of TP (Thematic Progression) from the analysis of the materials. After the comparative study of English and Chinese texts, the author has compared their similarities and differences in adoption of various thematic progression patterns. Based on the findings, further efforts have been made to probe from thought patterns and social values into the invisible social-cultural factors behind the visible linguistic phenomena. This research is expected to provide certain enlightenment on language pedagogy, to cast some light on cross-cultural communication, and to enrich the studies in the field of discourse analysis as a supplementary one.
