Cognitive view of metaphor lays great emphasis on the role of human perception, regarding metaphorical process as mapping of one domain onto another domain. As the most fundamental one, spatial metaphor is very significant for human cognition since most of our abstract conceptions are constructed and comprehended through the understanding of space. From the perspective of cognitive metaphor, this thesis analyzes the sense formation and evolution of three pairs of Chinese locality words SHANG/XIA, QIAN/HOU and ZUO/YOU.Image schema constitutes the primary sense of these locality words.By means of metaphorical mapping, the original spatial sense extends from spatial domain to other abstract domains such as time, quantity, social status, state, etc, thereby producing multiple senses of locality words. On the basis of foregoing research f'mdings, this thesis further probes into the entry representation of locality words in Chinese-English dictionaries for CFL learners. The current C-E dictionaries are merely rebuilt from monolingual Chinese dictionaries in which little attention has been paid to the interrelations among different senses and difficulties in the acquisition of locality words for CFL leamers. By analyzing the arrangement of locality words in four current Chinese-English dictionaries, this thesis attempts to provide some tentative suggestions for entry representation of locality words in C-E dictionaries for CFL learners,so as to help CFL learners construct a semantic system similar to that of Chinese native speaker's during dictionary use,and to facilitate their understanding and memorization of locality words.
