The problem of Socrates is a great problem in western tradition. The contest between Nietzsche and Socrates is the representative of the contest between the ancients and the moderns. By restate the problem of Socrates, Nietzsche examined the whole tradition of reason philosophy started by Socrates. He rejected the classical philosophy, and turned to a new philosophy combined Bible religion with Greek experience. By reading up the animadversion upon Socrates by Nietzsche, this thesis try to understand the core of the contest between the ancients and the moderns. Firstly, there is an introduction of the problem of Socrates. Then I clarify the problem of Socrates in The Birth of Tragedy and Twilight of the Idols. I found that Nietzsche had distinguished Socrates and Socratism. Nietzsche animadverted on Socratism but not Socrates. Nietzsche is ambivalent on Socrates. He is contest with Socrates. In the last part, I try to turn on "the second sailing" of the problem of Socrates by analyzing the image of Socrates in Apology of Socrates, Symposium and Phaedo.
