Mark Twain, father of modern American literature, is an outstanding representative of American writers of realism in the nineteenth century. He is both a master of humor and a great novelist and establishes a new milestone for America and the world in the field of literature.Of all the works by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, honored as the origin of all modern American literature, is no doubt the most noticeable. Controversial as it has been, the novel has been commended and appreciated worldwide for the unprecedented grandeur of its artistic quality and ideology. It has also been among the list of the required reading of literature all over the world, strongly proving its splendid glamour.On the textual analysis of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the present thesis is intended to study the artistic characteristics of Mark Twain's novels. Firstly, combined with the development of the threads of the plot, it can be demonstrated that it is distinctive of the plot in Mark Twain's novels, forcefully highlighting the theme. Secondly, the thesis proves the characteristics of characterization in Mark Twain's novels by the study of main characters'language and psychology. Thirdly, the thesis comprehensively subjects various compositions of humor and satire to careful scrutiny and extracts the abundant elements of black humor in order to evidence the diversity of the writing techniques of Mark Twain. Fourthly, the conclusion summarizes the general artistic characteristics of Mark Twain and fully displays his profound grounding in art.The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain's peak works, not only symbolizes the formation of his maturity of art but also establishes him a lofty status in the literary world.
