Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the most fruitful genius of the New German Cinema, has vibrated the world film circles since 1970's with his profound movie themes, novel narrative techniques, intense picture impulses and rich life connotations. In a professional career that lasted only 13 years, Fassbinder left behind 43 movies for the people and the number would be 60 if taking account of the movies he acted the leading role. These movies lead in the movie circle in the theme, the style, the diversification, the quantity and the quality, and moreover they are still emitting the ray and touching our hearts nowadays. However, the degree of importance and the research depth on Fassbinder in China are not proportional comparing with Fassbinder's artistic achievements. In our country some research viewpoints in the 1980s and 1990s still have tremendous influence until now. Therefore this thesis does further systematical and thorough research on Fassbinder by unifying the newest translated introductions and audio and video materials, in which the discussion about Fassbinder's existentialism consciousness is hoped to be a beneficial supplement. The introduction part mainly draws out the research angle of view and briefly introduces the research significance, the domestic and foreign relevant studies, the research techniques and the innovation.Five parts are mainly discussed in this article. The first, An overview of Fassbinder's movie creation. After a brief introduction of Fassbinder's life, the author divides Fassbinder's movie creation career into three stages based on the observances of Fassbinder's 26 movies. They are"Minimalist Art Film"stage from Fassbinder's first movie"Love is Colder than Death"to"Beware of Holy Whore","Melodrama Model"stage with"The Merchant of the Four Seasons"as the watershed and"German Hollywood Movie"stage with"The Marriage of Maria Braun"as the watershed. The division standards are Fassbinder's stable movie style characteristics formed in his different movie creation periods and therefore this part is not only to comb Fassbinder's film production threads but also to clear up Fassbinder's movie viewpoints(form, development, mature). The second part, Analysis on the cultural themes of Fassbinder's movies. Fassbinder's movies are always endowed with personalized and socialized connotations, but loneliness, despair and resistance run through all the subjects concerning individuals and society. Therefore this part takes Fassbinder's late-period works"the Feminine Tetralogy"and"Querelle"as a case and analyzes the cultural themes of Fassbinder's movies from the angles of criticizing society and paying attention to oneself . The theme analysis of"Querelle"is a new attempt. Meanwhile, combining more and more newly published interviews and audio and video materials about Fassbinder, the author puts forward creative views on some misconceptions of the feminine images in"the Feminine Tetralogy".The third part, Movie image style analysis on Fassbinder's films. Fassbinder produces"German Hollywood movies"and the fundamental reason for the differences from"American Hollywood movies"is that Fassbinder attempts to embody profound ideological contents, which is also the original intention of his filmmaking,"I make the audience feel and think". To achieve this goal, Fassbinder uses the rhetoric devices"Alienation"and"symbol". The main concern of this part is to discuss how Fassbinder uses movie language expression skills to explain his movie themes. The forth part, Further research on Fassbinder's movie style origin using the theories of psychoanalysis and existentialist philosophy. Four parts are classified: growth experience confirmation, Individual characteristic projection, Time background influence and existentialism infiltration. Among them, the viewpoint of Fassbinder's works influenced by existentialism philosophic theories is original. The fifth part, Existentialism world outlooks in Fassbinder's works. The author analyses Fassbinder's movie creation from the angle of existentialism philosophy which greatly influenced modern west society. Through the analysis of the connection between Fassbinder's movie themes and existentialism philosophy subjects, the author elaborates the existentialism consciences in Fassbinder's movies as well as existentialism surmounting. Finally, the author discusses the practical significance in the conclusion part.
