The Practical Value Of Skopos Theory In Translation

The Skopos Theory is the core theory of German school of functional translation. It argues that the Skopos determines the whole translation. It considers "adequacy" as the translation criterion. And it proposes three translating rules—Skopos rule, intratextual coherence and intertextual coherence, and one loyalty principle.This thesis is to validate the practical value of Skopos Theory in translation. The thesis chooses and compares some examples which can reflect the differences of strategies and Skopoi between two translators of Luotuo Xiangzi. And it also evaluates and analyzes the effects of translation according to the three rules and one criterion of Skopos Theory. Through the comparative study, this thesis proves the theory indeed has a very important practical value. Therefore, in translation practice and research, we can consider Skopos Theory as guidance and adopt flexible strategies to get better translation effect.
