A Study On The Indeterminacy Of Translation

In recent years, as cross-cultural communicative activities between different countries become more and more frequent, many scholars have paid more attention to the phenomenon of indeterminacy of translation. They have made researches on the indeterminacy of translation from such different perspectives as hermeneutics, deconstructionism, western Marxism and so forth, but only few studies the relationship between the determinacy and the indeterminacy of translation.Based on deconstructionism, the present author chooses poems both from Chinese and English as data to analyze factors causing the phenomenon of the indeterminacy of translation. In the analysis, the present thesis discusses the relationship between the determinacy and the indeterminacy of translation. They are contradictory, inter-dependence and inter-conversion. In the end, the thesis points out theoretical values of the present study, and its revelations on translation criterion and the relationship between the subjects and the objects in translation activity.The present thesis plays a positive role in the process of developing translation studies by analyzing and explaining the phenomenon of indeterminacy of translation from the perspective of deconstructionism. It is significant for us to understand the indeterminacy of translation. The translator should be highly aware of his subjectivity and creativity, and choose the most suitable translation criterion in the process of translation. In this way, a qualified translated text can be presented.
