Reading fills a significant position in the English instruction,but years of reading instruction fails to meet the expectation due to the lack of learning autonomy and initiative on the part of students.Inquiry-based instruction is an approach to encouraging students' questioning,analyzing and resolving questions with their acquired knowledge,and this process gives rise to the improvement of students' learning autonomy.This thesis revolves around the effectiveness of inquiry-based instruction on students' autonomy in reading cause.Based on the theoretical review of learner autonomy in the reading course and inquiry-based instruction,the contrastive analyses of the data collected from the experiment concerning students' reading achievement,learning strategies and their attitudes offer abundant evidence of the enormous advantages of the inquiry-based instruction which is effective in the promotion of their learning autonomy and conducive to the improvement of English reading instruction.This research is hopefully to be of some assistance to the relevant further research.
