The quarter financial report is a period summary of the performance of a corporation;it is also the important source for the shareholders and investors to know the operating conditions of the corporation.The mainly communicative purpose of the quarter financial report is to supply the information,establish the image of the corporation and persuade the potential investors.One feature of the quarter report is to stress the truth and accuracy of the language usage.This research analyzes the usage condition of vagueness of 30 pieces of corporation quarter financial reports of the United States and studies three questions:firstly,how the vagueness realized in the corporation quarter report and in what ways to use;secondly,how the vagueness choice-making in the quarter report to achieve the dynamic adaptation process;third, what are the pragmatic functions of vagueness in corporation quarter report.The analysis of 30 pieces of the American corporation quarter report of some loss industries during the financial crisis in 2008,the conclusions are:there are three ways to realize the vagueness in the corporation quarter report,vague addictives,vague words or phrases and vague implications.The choice-making of the vague language adapted to different language structures and context,including the mental world,the social world and the physical world.The application of the vagueness is a dynamic adaptation process with the context and language structures.There are some important pragmatic functions of vagueness in the corporation quarter report,the crisis avoidance of conveying the negative information,to ensure the accuracy and brief of language and the corporation image protection.
