Projection is concerned with such a type of language phenomenon that does not function as a direct representation of non-linguistic experience but as a representation of a linguistic representation. This thesis is an attempt to study the interpersonal meanings of projections in English academic articles, especially professional and authoritative journal articles in the field of applied linguistics.Based on the major ideas of Martin and White's engagement system, Bakhtin's theory of dialogism and Brown and Levinson's politeness theory,we suggest a model to interpret the interpersonal meanings of projections in academic articles, taking into account more types of projection structures as more as possible instead of confining it to clause complex and embedded structures,to give a fuller picture of its various interpersonal meanings. This model lays more emphasis on the concept that the projection system provides a wide range of options for the writer in a very appropriate and polite way to express his/her values,to construct a dialogic context and align with the multiple readerships in the academic texts. And projection is a very complex linguistic phenomenon, which involves many layers of structures and meanings. Thus to give a comprehensive interpretation of interpersonal meanings of projection, this model starts the analysis from two aspects:extra-vocalisation and intra-vocalisation.By these two different sources of projection and heteroglossic patterns, projection functions differently to provide the writer an effective means to engage with the implicated readers, general readers and their value positions, and to establish different kinds of dialogic relationships with them. Then authentic examples of different types of projections in English academic articles are cited to show under this model how various projections function to express different interpersonal meanings.By projecting a certain proposition explicitly to the external source,it can be shown how a new piece of research article to some degree take into account or respond to the prior utterances, which constitutes an explicit manifestation of the ongoing dialogue of the discipline, and how the writer simultaneously position him/herself to the negotiation with the multiple readerships. The meanings can be divided into endorse, acknowledge and distance.Through mtra-vocansation,mat is from witnin me writer s own utterances eitner explicitly or implicitly, the writer references, invokes, anticipates, acknowledges or responds to these convergent or even divergent voices and establishes solidarity to different degrees with the potential readers. And the interpersonal meanings are to be analyzed from pronounce, objectify, concur, entertain, and directive. All these aspects represent an academic writer's efforts to engage with all kinds of dialogic relationships and actively align multiple readerships into their argumentation. After using the model to the analysis of interpersonal meanings of projections by relating them to the specific context of academic articles, this research finds that projection provides a good and effective means for the academic writers to engage with dialogic diversity in an appropriate way.Academic text is seen as a dynamic and ongoing dialogue, where there is active interaction between the writer, the projected author, the readers, whose voice are referenced, invoked, anticipated, acknowledged, negotiated with or challenged, aligned and so on.Thus our study provides a potent counter to the generally accepted notion that academic discourse is information-laden,objective and voiceless. Our study makes some contribution to the interpersonal study of projection theoretically and also seems to be a complement to the study of academic discourse. And practically it also can shed some light on the teaching and writing of the academic paper, especially on promoting the students' ability to express interpersonal meanings in an appropriate way and on raising their awareness of multiple readerships to engage with them and to align them into solidarity.
