A Preliminary Study Of Erdaoliang Site In Nihewan Basin Of The Upper Paleolithic

In 1970s,many scholars had done extensive study on Quaternary Paleontology of Nihewan Basin.Nihewan Basin is well-known for its rich geological sequence,abundant animal fossils and plentiful Paleolithic sites.Recently,new important discoveries have been made in the area, some scholars have founded a integrated cultural sequence of Nihewan Basin,and Erdaoliang site is one of them.Erdaoliang site belongs to typical microlithic industry,it is characterized by a kind of representative technological type—boat-shaped core,it makes great sense to study different microlithic industrial types of Upper Paleolithic from Nihewan Basin to North China. This thesis makes a preliminary report on the study of the newly found in Erdaoliang site, including the background of scientific investigations and new achievements on paleoanthropological research in the Nihewan Basin,the results of archaeological excavations conducted at the site,and archaeological characteristics,typological,technological and functional analyses on the unearthed 1915 stone artifacts,as well as the age and nature of the site. At the same time,according to integrated analyses of taphonomy,topography and cultural relic, the study concludes the characters taphonomy type and of site,and reestablishes behavioral options adopted by hominids.The study indicates that the Erdaoliang site belongs to typical microlithic industry;there are many boat-shaped cores,microblades,burins and backed knives;boat-shaped core reduction technique is a representative character;typological and technological characteristics of stone tool assemblage show obvious differences with simultaneous Paleolithic sites(Youfang,Hutouliang and Jijitan sites,characterized by wedge-shaped core reduction technique) in the region,it provides new data and explanation for archaeological types in Nihewan Basin.At the same time, there are two kinds of microlithic technological techniques in neighboring regions of Nihewan Basin,this question need to get further scientific explanation.The study attempts to take further research in analyzing technological sequence of making boat-shaped cores,refitting study and fabrication on burins,obtains some scientific conclusions about discussing archaeological culture.Erdaoliang Paleolithic site is one of the most important sites of microlithic industry in Nihewan Basin.Moreover,it has the most important position in microlithic industry of Upper Paleolithic from North China to Northeast Asia.
