Culture is an important theme of contemporary foreign language education (FLE) research. People generally agree that culture is an important part of foreign language education. Scholars at home and abroad have achieved a lot in this area. However, it must be pointed out that enthusiastic theoretical explorations in the field of cultural studies in the past decades are not followed by equal zeal in College English teaching and learning practice. It is common to see teachers busying themselves either in imparting language points to learners or in developing learners' language skills, but paying less attention to cultural instruction. In order to improve the depressing situation, the thesis offers some suggestions accordingly, so that College English teachers can know how to help students know the target culture and improve their cultural quality.This thesis consists of three parts:The first part mainly focuses to the significance of cultural instruction in College English Intensive Reading course. It begins with the relationship between language and culture; Then it focuses on the objectives of foreign langue teaching and College English Curriculum Requirements (for Trial Implementation); At last, it describes the importance of College English Intensive Reading Course.The second part presents the status quo of cultural instruction in College English Intensive Reading Course through the analyses of a questionnaire and the textbook. The subjects of the questionnaire are 86 College English teachers from Shandong University of Technology. From the survey can we learned that most teachers regard culture as an essential part of language teaching, but they don't know how to introduce culture effectively or systematically because there is no cultural instruction syllabus and they don't have enough cultural knowledge and teaching training. Then the paper is devoted to the reasons that cause the depressing condition of the cultural instruction. It includes the lack of specific instruction in College English Curriculum Requirements (for Trial Implementation), the influence of the traditional teaching method , the influence of teaching material, the influence of test and the inadequacy of teachers.The last part shows us how to improve the cultural instruction. It includes how to improve the teachers'professional quality in cultural instruction, the change of College English Curriculum Requirements (for Trial Implementation) , and how to introduce culture at the three stages .
