As we all know, tyrant and tyranny is one of the most essential topics in medieval history. Not only in Asia, but also in medieval Europe, there were many tyrants. This paper will deal with the theories and facts about tyrant and tyranny in medieval England, and it will also analyze the origin and development of tyrant and tyranny in the classical period and in the early medieval history. The framework of this paper is based on the contents above.In the first chapter, it explains the value of this theme. Although there is much research about the kingship and the constitutional government of medieval England, the research of tyrant and tyranny has been not enough, and this research is important to help people understand the kingship more clearly.The second chapter discusses the origin and the early development of tyrant and tyranny. The first word about"tyrant"comes from works of ancient Greece. Plato, Aristotle, Cicero explained their ideas about"tyrant". In the middle centuries, only priests can criticize tyrants, and they requested people obey tyrants. After the Germans came to Europe, the custom and the ideas of Germans give the"tyrant"new meaning.In the third chapter, there is a summary about typical theories of tyrant and tyranny in England, including the theory of John of Salisbury and its influence to the Jurists, and the theories of Tudor times.The forth chapter introduces the facts of tyrant and tyranny in medieval England.There is a conclusion in the ending of this paper. The writer believes that the facts of tyrant and tyranny in medieval England are as serious as in ancient Asia.
