This paper is an attempt to apply functional stylistics to coherence reconstruction in stream of consciousness writing translation. Coherence research in this paper is located within the framework of Hallidayan systemic functional linguistics and the nature and realization of coherence are explored from the perspective of the three metafunctions: the ideational function, the interpersonal function and the textual function. Only when a discourse has conveyed these three strands of meaning successfully, will the target discourse receivers be able to make a coherent interpretation of the discourse. For literary works, style is the soul or spirit of both the original and the translation, so the equivalence of the aesthetic effect is most important in literary translation. Compared with the more rationally and logically organized description in traditional novels, passages of stream of consciousness appear to be disorderly and fragmentary in form, and sensuous and ambiguous in meaning. Due to the unique stylistics of stream of consciousness novel, coherence reconstruction standard is a rather disputed issue. Coherence here does not mean the surface fluency or cohesion in textual level, but coherence in discourse level, involving coherent factors such as cultural context, psychological context and concrete linguistic structure, reflected by Halliday's three metafunctions. Therefore, the translation should not violate the original writing techniques and should be loyal to the original in both content and form. The thesis carries out an analysis of Mrs. Dalloway, and makes a comparison between different Chinese target versions. Both Gu Qinan and Wang Jiaxiang's translation works are famous for their beautiful languages, fresh tone as well as translation skills, but deficiencies still exist in them. The present thesis makes some research on the two versions by functional stylistics approach, so as to find out how the versions establish or lack coherent reconstruction in the process of translation.A comprehensive research into coherence reconstructing by functional stylistics will enable translators to see clearly the need to reconstruct coherence in stream of consciousness novel translation, and familiarize them with various grammatical cohesive devices and cohesive functions in constructing a unified coherent text.
