North Wei, one dynasty founded by Tuoba Regime of Xian Bei nation, ended the separation by 16 states ruling in North of China and contributed to the development of the economic and culture at that times and merge of each nation. Empress working as emperor was happening during the history of North Wei , no matter in good times and bad times. It was one of parts affecting the developments and changes in North Wei. However, most studies about empress dowagers are concerned about Culture Emperor Dowager Feng rather than other empress dowagers. The thesis tries best to describe all empresses working as emperors in North Wei to make a better understanding about the history of North Wei from another point of view.The thesis have parts as follows:Part One describes the phenomena that empresses worked as emperors in times of Tuoba Xianbei, the early, the middle,the late time of Beiwei. The main subjects are Empress Chang, Empress Feng, and Empress Hu .Part Two explains the phenomena that empresses working as emperors in North Wei from the points of influences of matriarchal clan, deficits of political system in North Wei, young emperors, and competent empresses in order to find out similarities in phenomena that empresses working as an emperor.Part Three demonstrates the positive role played by empresses worked as emperors, including stability of state power, foundation of filial piety, and removement of the system that empresses would be killed if the sons got power.Part Four draws conclusions and summarizes the thesis to show the clue of developments and the features of history in North Wei through the analysis of empresses working as emperors in North Wei.
