Christianity is deep-rooted in the western world and also widely regarded as one of the two sources of the western literature. The Bible as the official scripture of Judaism and Christianity is the representative work of Christian literature. But for most of people all over the world, the Bible is valuable because it is a significant classical literary work for all the human beings.Biblical literature fosters and nurtures multitude world-known great writers who use the theme and esthetic ideas in the Bible to create many famous works. So the Bible exerts the far-reaching influence on the development of world literature.William Faulkner is one of such writers.Greatly nourished in the Christian tradition and strongly influenced by modernism,Faulkner makes use of the biblical resources largely in his own and unique way.On the one hand,Faulkner uses character prototypes, character relationship modes, plotting modes, images and so on in the Bible extensively in his works to look for parallelisms between the Bible and his stories.By making use of those archetypes,Faulkner makes his stories surpass the South, surpass the USA, represent panhuman history and present, have the manner of the epic.On the other hand, Faulkner makes some displacements of recurrent archetypes, which foreground the themes of his novels.Through displacements,Faulkner manages to explore the humanity, exposes and condemns the evils of racism and slavery. This thesis attempts to analyze Faulkner's biblical complex and how this kind of complex is embodied in his masterpiece Absalom,Absalom!.The author tries to study the novel from archetypal perspective with a focus on Biblical allusions in it.Through an exploration of different archetypes in Faulkner's fictions Absalom,Absalom!,my purpose is to induce a kind of pattern in Faulkner's writings which reveals the artist's capability to assimilate archetypes as well as displace them. His unique method of using archetypes remarkably foregrounds the themes of his fictions and marks him as an innovative and talented writer.
