A Research On College English Vocabulary Teaching

Vocabulary teaching is the main content in college English teaching,and is meaningful to English teaching.College English vocabulary teaching largely includes many aspects such as teaching target,teaching content,teaching method,teaching evaluation.Survey indicated that many issues existed in current college English vocabulary teaching:(1) Teachers held part of extreme views on the concept of vocabulary teaching.For instance,some teachers thought direct vocabulary teaching at college stage is unnecessary;some held extreme views about vocabulary paraphrase in English or Chinese in course of teaching;other teachers held completely negative attitude towards rote retention of English words.(2) Vocabulary teaching method is not appropriate.For example,teachers usually dominate the class,seldom offer chances to students for practicing;their teaching methods are too traditional,monotonous; vocabulary teaching is off context and isolated;most teachers seldom mention the cultural connotation and pragmatic meaning of words.(3) Teachers neglect guiding students on words studying strategies.For instance,guidance on mnemonics;guidance on extracurricular reading.(4) Some conundrums existed in vocabulary teaching.For instance,it is difficult to make students understand the relations between different lexical meanings of polysemy;although students learned a lot of words,there is no obvious improvement in their language competence.The factors that caused these problems lie in many aspects.Mainly they are:(1) On conception,some teachers believe direct vocabulary teaching is not communicative and unnecessary because college students can learn vocabulary by themselves;some believe students' English level is not good,so teaching should be in mother language while some others advocate teaching only in English so as to create English studying environment for students; some teachers believe that rote retention is not scientific and retention should be based on comprehension and lay more emphasis on its entertaining function.(2) On teaching methods,neglecting raising students' communicative skill,teacher-oriented in class; paying no attention to attract students' attention,the teaching forms are too monotonous;paying no attention to the connection between vocabulary and passage, teaching vocabulary isolatedly;paying no attention to theory study,neglect teaching cultural connotation and pragmatic meaning of words.(3) On strategy,teachers are apt to undertake all assignments in vocabulary teaching,paying no attention to raise students' independent vocabulary studying strategies.(4) On teaching conundrums, different lexical meanings in polysemy are complicated,it is hard to make students to understand and memorize them;students lack of storing plentiful "lexical chunks", weak in expressing.To solve those problems in college English vocabulary teaching demands for various efforts.According to current situation and main issues,the following points should be emphasized and the fitting strategies should be formed:(1) To build up correct conception on vocabulary teaching.For instance,to advocate combination between direct vocabulary teaching and indirect vocabulary teaching;to advocate vocabulary teaching in combination between English and mother language;to advocate combination between rote retention and multi-memorizing strategy.(2) To improve vocabulary teaching method.For example,students-oriented,raising communicative skills;utilizing different teaching methods,expanding teaching space; paying much attention to text context,leading students to understand lexical meanings; emphasizing teaching pragmatic meaning,intensifying the understanding on cultural connotation of words.(3) To guide students' memorizing strategy.(4) To intensify students' extracurricular reading.(5) To perfect lexical meaning teaching in polysemy. (6) To pay much attention to raise students' language competence.The author hopes the outcome of research and the given suggestions could be reference for those who have been dedicating to college English teaching.
