Conceptual blending/integration theory, which was brought forward by Fauconnier and Turner, argues cognitive mechanism for language comprehension from the perspectives of cognitive science and neuroscience. It also reveals the application of reasoning strategies in the process of meaning construction. However, this theory exposes some drawbacks in analyzing languages. This idea can be supported by the research of Tversky and Kahneman(1973) who have demonstrated the reasoning strategies are themselves fraught with weaknesses.Damasio's somatic marking theory illustrates the importance of the emotion in the process of reasoning and emphasizes that emotion can guide our comprehension. This claim is confirmed further by Slingerland(2005) who proves that somatic marking theory can supplement the conceptual blending theory to get ideal cognitive analysis of language phenomenon. This thesis is an attempt to makes a cognitive analysis of Li Yu's poems by adopting the conceptual blending theory and somatic marking theory as the theoretical framework. After each poem is analyzed primarily in terms of conceptual blending theory,a further and consummate explanation of the poem will be given, combined with the somatic marking theory. In this thesis,I pick out Li Yu's five poems and divide them into two kinds:ones expressing his feeling about departure from his relatives or friends and the others expressing sorrow and hate for himself. In the analysis of the first kind of poems, application of somatic markers isn't depicted by diagrams, but words. In the second poems, through the use of CAUSALITY space as the generic space, the conceptual blending and somatic markers can be represented and explained by the diagrams together. These two kinds of analysis share some common points: feelings conduce to lucid comprehension of separate blends as a whole in one poem and analysis can reveal distinctly how the poet makes these poems.Analysis of these five poems may let us make such a conclusion that the primary purpose of comprehension of poems is not to help us apprehend a situation or the meaning structures, but rather to help us to know how the poet makes these poems.Meanwhile,we can fred that analysis of Li Yu's poems provides illustrations of complex multiple-scope blends applies to Chinese classical poems.
