Among the humanities, aesthetics has a perfect integration with translation. Aesthetics has the guiding significance on translation no matter in theory or practice. Poetry is the highest form of the art of language and concentration of human wisdom. We can also apply aesthetics to poetry translation. Qualified translators are able to convey the content, flavor, and style of the original. However, as a result of the differences in language culture and region, poetry translation when converted from one language into another language will be subject to certain constraints. The author believes that the translation of poetry has some potentials at the same time subjects itself to certain restrictions. The thesis studies the restrictions and potentials of poetry translation from the perspective of aesthetics to explore the translation of poetry. There are three main parts in this thesis. In the first part, the author reviews the poetry translation theory both in western countries and in China. In the second part, the author analyzed the restrictions of poetry translation from the perspective of content and form and the potentials of poetry translation from"Three Beauties"principle proposed by Xu Yuanzhong. In the third part, the author concludes that poetry translation is the art of language and the art of reproduction and re-creation. Poetry translation uses the target language to reproduce the aesthetic components of the original works, so it has the process of aesthetic experience and aesthetic reproduction. The translator always tries to come over the cultural blocks, and find a way to achieve equal aesthetic effect or to arouse similar aesthetic feelings among target language readers. At the same time, the author gives advices on how to reduce the restrictions and develop the potentials in the process of poetry translation. It is wished that they will contribute to poetry translation.
