In the basic concepts and the implemented proposal of College English Curriculum Standard,auto-learning has become a very important way of English learning.There are a lot of means to develop high vocational students' auto-learning ability;one of them is using modern multimedia technology to develop auto-learning in English reading curriculum.And it is very effective.The multimedia teaching based on the information technology is merging with English courses.There is solid theoretical foundation in it. And it emphasizes students' study subjectivity and personality thought such aspects as teaching ideas,teaching resources,teaching ways,study strategies and learning styles,etc.So it can help students to develop auto-learning ability.There are three common auto-learning models guided by multi-media used in reading courses.Because teachers use the multimedia in different ways,it has a direct impact on students' exertion of auto-learning as well as their learning results.For using multimedia to develop high vocational school students' auto-learning in English reading,it is critical to use effective strategies. First,change the roles of both teachers and students.Second,it is necessary to guide students to create a good environment conducive to auto-learning and guide them to effectively use the various teaching resources in the environment.Third,use the method of meta-cognition strategy.In this paper,a variety of study methods are used to discuss the above, such as comparative analysis,example analysis,chart analysis and summary.Finally,come to the conclusion that use of multimedia teaching mode can overcome part of the defect of the traditional teaching mode. It's also beneficial to let students play the role of the main learner and to make them more positive and more independent to learn English.Then it will improve their general English ability.Of course,today there are still questions in this new kind of English reading teaching mode,so we have to do further exploration and development on it.
