This paper mainly researches the pessimism of Thomas Hardy's novel in his late age, and the study object is Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscur. The first part of the article inspects Thomas Hardy's personal experience and historical background of his life; excavates the reasons for Thomas Hardy's pessimism and the process of the formation; and based on that, interpret Thomas Hardy's pessimism ideological connotations. The second part of the article discusses the specific performance of Thomas Hardy's pessimism in his late two novels, using the description of the environment and figures specifically analysis Thomas Hardy's pessimism. The third part of article examine Thomas Hardy's pessimism from a point of view of cultural interpretation, think Thomas Hardy's pessimism is inheritance and development of ancient Greek culture and also contain elements of modernism, defined Thomas Hardy's status of literary history in the world. The full text consists of five parts.The preface briefly introduces Thomas Hardy's personal experience and creative process. At the same time, this section reviewed and divided the development and changes of his creative ideas into stages.The first chapter is"The formation and connotation of Thomas Hardy's pessimism". The first two sections of the chapter focus on Thomas Hardy's personal life history and social background of the Victorian age, which explained the formation of Thomas Hardy's pessimism of the internal and external conditions. The third section discusses the connotation of Thomas Hardy's pessimism, and the performance of Thomas Hardy's pessimism as a strong sense of social criticism, its essence is a new show of Western humanitarian tradition under the conditions of that time, which have the feature that is the obscure but firm belief for the future of mankind and do spadework for the next chapter..The second chapter is"The exemplification of Thomas Hardy's pessimism in his late entries". This chapter consists mainly of two parts, which explore the relations between his pessimism and the descriptions of environment and figure character in his late entries. This chapter also mainly analyzes the plight of the little guy on the social conditions at that time, which respond the connotation of pessimism mentioned in the first chapter and do spadework for next chapter.The third chapter is"The cultural interpretation of Thomas Hardy's pessimism". The chapter analyses the relations between Thomas Hardy's pessimism and the concept of fate in the ancient Greece and the culture of modernism from a point of view of inheritance and development, clearly defined Thomas Hardy's important position in the literary history and ideology history.The conclusion is"The summary analysis for Thomas Hardy's pessimism". First of all, the root causes of social and cultural contradictions is regional and unbalanced economic development and the continuity and asynchronous of the field of ideology. Secondly, the humanistic spirit reflected in Thomas Hardy's pessimism is very positive.
