Both the Chinese supernatural tales in the Ming-Qing dynasties and British Gothic novels in the 18th Century are about ghost.Ghost is a fictional product.Literary on ghost abounds in China and Britain.Fiction is a genre that creates a new imaginary world.When the fiction is used to depict or portray a ghost image,its double-scale will provide readers with free and broad space for imagination.The two kind of fictions belong to a subgenus and in the margin status in both Chinese and English literary history.Since 1980s,studies on Gothic novels in Britain become more and more popular. Influenced by the old political criteria and the restriction in the mode of reading,less attention has been paid to Gothic novels in translating and researching in China,and the readers are unfamiliar with them.Some critics have made new interpretation and annotation to Ming-Qing supernatural tales, but their visual field is normally confined to the national literature;lacking of the world view of the comparative literature field,very few regard its important value and the significance within the world scope.Based on the view of comparative and analyse representative works,this dissertation is to discuss the similarities and differences between them on the art of narration(narrative space,narrativetime,narrative perspective) in order to reveal their common esthetic characteristics and respective uniqueness and value.The whole dissertation consists of five chapters.The introduction part summarizes the supernatural tales and Gothic novels and points out the comparability between them.The first chapter is about "narrative space comparison".The writer thinks that spacial narrative of real and transience are used in both,which can produce weird and the terror esthetic results.They have similarities,and differences as well as.The second chapter focuses on the use of "narrative time comparison" in Chinese and British ghost fictions,the writer proposes that both of them employ three differrent ways of narrative time performance—the angles of narrate,flashback,flashforward which are their difference in narration.The third chapter is "the comparison of narrative perspective",from the angle of choice and utilization of narrative perspective,the writer analyzes the similarities and differences between them,namely omniscience narrative perspective,knowledge-limited narrative perspective,multiple narrative perspective.The conclusion part points out the importance and the significance of comparison between two kind of novels.
