This dissertation aims to study the screenplay dialogues in films and teleplays by using Speech Act Theory from a pragmatic viewpoint. The previous studies in this field focus more on the characters and the relationship analysis than the analysis of the effects aroused by the dialogues while this dissertation pays more attention to the influence of the screenplay dialogues on the audience and the reasons for that. The author investigated language usages of nearly 100 films and teleplays of different genres and language produced in recent ten years. The results show that not all the effects aroused by the speech act are of the original purpose of the playwrights, and detailed pragmatic analysis is made with the help of the Speech Act Theory in this dissertation.
