China's First National traditional(Chinese) opera Festival was held in Beijing from the date Oct.6th to Nov.14th in 1952.80 kinds of operas were shown by more than 1600 actors who separately belonged to 37 troupes which were in 23 genres of drama.For the amount of any parts,it was quite an occasion that was unprecedented in history.The festival which was organized by Ministry of Culture of the central government displayed very well the special attention that the leadership of the country paid to the heritage of traditional culture and to its living repositories.It also reflected the resolution of policymakers to preserve the heritage of traditional culture and construct upon the basis of it.In summary,the festival attained huge success because more than 3000 workers were hard at it together.The festival represented the traditional art was abundant and had a great achievement.The festival cemented the result the reform of opera achieved and inspected the result of the reform work.Furthermore,all kinds of opera which were in local area had a chance to learn and absorb mutually,for the festival provided a medium to communicate with opera for artists.Meanwhile,according to the repertoires,the art world discussed and summarized to seek what method could solve the problem of developing opera.To drive the developing opera,it had an indelible effect.However,if we re-examine and re-evaluate the episode from the perspective of the development of Chinese traditional opera to the long history,we shall discover that its significance and bearing on Chinese opera during the second half of the 20th century went beyond the intentions of its promoters.The present dissertation is based on a comprehensive collection of the historical material regarding the festival.It provides a detailed description of the sequence of the festival,as well as the changes in the lives of people and the events that occurred as a result of it.With the reform of opera in a different period in history,the author summed up of the experiences and lessons that the opera had encountered since the Reform and Opening.Expectantly,it will provide an inspiration to the Preservation of Cultural Heritage currently.
