Since translation is one of the most important means of cross-cultural communication, translators and translation theorists have attached increasingly more importance to the reproduction of the source culture in the target text. As we know, translation is a recreation of representation in one language of what is written in another language. However, we must not translate the text to the neglect of the culture, for language is invariably inseparable from culture. In the context of globalization, a translator is supposed to do his/her part to disseminate the source culture through the linguistic transference of the source text. From the perspective of foreignization strategy, the author intends to conduct a comparative study of the two English versions of AH Q Zheng Zhuan given by Yan Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang and William A. Lyell respectively. Under the guidance of Lawrence Venuti's theories on foreignization, the thesis intends to show how the strategy is applicable to the reproduction of the source culture through citing the above-mentioned translators' versions of Chinese traditional culture, customs, idioms and allusions. The study illustrates that the source culture can be, to a large degree, faithfully re-created in the target culture and the translated source culture can satisfactorily meet the expectations of target readers. In conclusion, the application of the strategy of foreignization to the translation of Chinese literary works can effectively help spread the Chinese culture to the Western world, and so enhance the 'soft power' of China.
