The Translation Of Public Speeches From The Theory Of Equal Value Translation

This paper is mainly concerned with the translation of public speeches from the theory of equal value translation, aiming at the provision of useful guidance for translators who are engaged in public speech translation or persons who have interest in it.This paper first gives a brief account of previous studies on equivalence and public speeches, helping readers form a general idea with this regard. Then the author establishes a theoretical framework, based on Wu Xinxiang and Li Hongan's theory of equal value translation, with a view to facilitating the translation of public speeches through appropriate guidance.In order for the readers to familiarize themselves with the language employed in English public speeches before plowing their way through translation in person, an introduction to the language features of English public speeches is made.In the final analysis, the author expounds on"equivalences"at word, phrase, sentence, supra-sentence and text level—five different levels through a great number of real-life examples, so that the readers may profit from it by systematically learning a methodology and appropriately putting it into translation practice.Public speeches serve as an important channel for cultural exchanges and are evocative of distinctive characteristics of a specific era, so does their translation. Hopefully, this paper will make its contribution to the aforesaid.
