Qingdao dialect belongs to Jiao-liao subdialect of Northern Mandarin family.Mandarin is a typical tone language and Qingdao dialect is no exception to it.Qingdao dialect has many tone sandhis. Some of the sandhis share the same features with other northern dialects, while the other sandhis have their own characteristics. These sandhis provide evidence to support the modern phonetic and phonological theories. One of the theories is Optimality Theory which is a relatively new theory in phonology. However, because it can explain various phonetic and phonological phenomena cross-linguistically,Optimality Theory has become more and more popular in phonetic and phonological research today. In this paper,I described the tone sandhi phenomena of disyllabic words in Qingdao dialect and apply Optimality Theory to analyzing sandhi rules, focusing on the discussion of constraints concerning sandhi rules in Qingdao dialect and the order of the constraints.Based on the data available in Qingdao dialect and the principles of OT,I have discussed the constraints relevant and have worked out a hierarchical ranking as follows:PS,ANCHOR-R>>*SH,IDENT-IO(T),OCP>>OCP">>MAX-IO(F)>>DEP-IOThis constraint hierarchy well explains the reason why some disyllabic words change their tone while others not in phonological aspects. The accomplishment in this thesis provides more data and new methods not only for Qingdao Dialect research in the future but also for the research of other northern Chinese languages, especially for the tone sandhi systematic analysis cross-dialectally.This thesis used the method of integration of depiction and analysis,as well as the integration of static state and development. In the first part, the author analyzed data of Qingdao dialect, then presented an explicit explanation of disyllabic sandhi rules of Qingdao dialect in the framework of Optimality Theory.
