The development of translation study and literary theories are closely related. The traditional translation theory which aims at the faithfulness of the translated version is influenced by text-centered and author-centered literary theory. This traditional translation theory neglects the active and constructive role the TL readers play in the process of translation. Reception Theory developed during the late 1960s first emphasizes the reader'prominent status and reception of literary works and the important role the readers play in the realization of the meaning of literary works. The development of Reception Theory provided new research methods and angle on translation study. The dissertation discusses the English translations of Li Bai's poems from the translator's and TL readers'reception in the light of Reception Theory proving that different versions of the same are based on translators'different concretizations of the indeterminacies and the translators'consideration of TL readers'reception. Translators should adopt various translating strategies according to TL readers'horizon of expectation and reception to make TL readers understand and accept the translated version for the purpose of the realization of the aesthetic pole of a translated literary work. The author also attempts to explore some ways to deal with cultural specific words in poetry translation into English from the angle of Reception Theory. The dissertation is made up of six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction.Chapter Two is about the literature review. It will involve the development and main concepts of Reception Theory forming the theoretical bases for the study.Chapter Three discusses the enlightenment of some core conceptions of Reception Theory related to the dissertation on literary translation. Chapter Four is about the brief introduction of Li Bai, his poems and the translation of his poems.Chapter Five is the main part of the dissertation, discussing the translation of Li Bai's poems in the light of Reception Theory.Chapter Six gives a conclusion and points out a further study in this field.
