Style reproduction is always one of the most controversial and complex issues in literary translation research. There are various views on this issue among translation researchers. At present, translators have already reached a consensus that the style can be reproduced. However, the prose is one kind of self-expression art. Every famous writer has his or her unique literature style; moreover, they will show different style in different work. If translators cannot reproduce the original style successfully, their translations will lose the artistic value of prose translation, and become many pieces of current accounts. Therefore, the research of style translation is very important in the prose translation research. The author of this thesis gets an inspiration from Hirsch's "meaning" and "significance" theories as well as Prof. Liu Zhongde's translation criterion of "closeness", and makes a tentative study of style reproduction in prose translation. Basing on the theories of Hirsch's Hermeneutics, the author of this thesis makes an analysis of the style reproduction of three translations of Lao She's modern prose: two of them are Liushicong's English versions, and the left one is ZhangPeiji's English version. At first, the author carries on the discussion of the original style establishment in the light of Hirsch's theory, so as to establish the original style correctly. Then, she analyzes various factors in reproduction of the original style from both objective aspect and subjective aspect. The objective factors refer to the linguistic forms and the theme of the original texts, and they are the main factors to style reproduction. Translators should study the linguistic forms of the original texts carefully with considering the background of the originals, and deduce the theme of the texts at the same time. Then translators can choose the appropriate linguistic forms in their translations to reproduce the original style. And the main subjective factor is the significance of the original text. Different understanding of the originals will cause translators to obtain different significance about the original works. And the significances translators understand from the originals will influence the linguistic forms of their translations. Therefore, the translators should take these two factors into consideration, so as to transfer the original style to the utmost extent.
