Study Of Self-esteem Feature And Its Influencing Factors In Nursing Undergraduates Of Medical College

Self-esteem is considered to be influencing factor or correlative factor of many behavior results therefore it has been one of the main most extensive research topics. It has been indicated in a variety of researches that college students are high risk group of psychological obstacle. The data obtained from the State Educational Commission sampling survey of more than 12,000 college students indicated that there in deferent degrees was psychological barrier even illness in 20.23 percents of college students. Nursing specialty students are a special group among medical college students. For the situation of China, most girl students choose nursing major and because of girl's personality trait of sensitiveness, suspicions, timidity, fear, melancholy and being stickled in small things and there exist some unsound psychology or will such as flinch behavior, psychological panic when facing dilemma in these girls of single-sex groups. Psychological workers have made a large number of research of university students'mental health at present. But there are relative shortages of studing on nursing specialty girls'self-esteem.In this study,some scales and questionnaires:Self-esteem Scale (SES), Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), Coping Styles Questionnaire(CSQ)and Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) were used for surveying on personality, coping style, mental health of nursing specialty undergraduates. It was analysised that these factors how to influence on self-esteem.Self-esteem and affect path model being based on these factors were constructed further in order to provide an empirical scientific basis for nursing specialty university students'mental health education and to enrich and develop the research of self-esteem.1,000 nursing specialty undergraduates of the Medical University of ChongQing were surveied with Self-esteem Scale (SES), Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), Coping Styles Questionnaire(CSQ),Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) and self-made related factors questionnaire.The data being collected from the survey carried out the description statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, correlation and regression, multi- regression analysis and path analysis.There were three conclusions from the study: Firstly, nursing specialty undergraduates had higher self-esteem. Nursing specialty undergraduates'self-esteem related to the category, interpersonal communication, family structure and being only-child or not.There existed a significant difference in different grades, family factors and school factors.Secondly, concerned with the personality traits,the nursing specialty undergraduates showed a lower mean score of psychoticism lie and neuroticism,higher mean score of Extro-introversion . psychoticism and neuroticism was found to be negative correlation with Self-esteem.a lower mean sore of neuroticism was higher than the intermedius type ,and the intermedius type was higher than unstable type. Stepwise logistic regression analyses indicated that psychoticism influenced self-esteem indirectly.Thirdly, nursing specialty undergraduates prefer to using positive coping styles and less using negative coping styles.A positive correlation were fond between self-esteem and problem solving,help seeking, positive coping styles.A negative correlation were fond between self-esteem and complaining,restrain oneself,fantasy, negative coping styles.Fourdly, nursing specialty undergraduates showed a higher mean sore of obsessive- comprlsive, anxiety, phobic anxiety, paranoiel ideation, paychotism thanthe Chinese norm.The correlation is significant between self-esteem and SCL-90.Finaly, the personality, coping style, mental health had predictive effect on self-esteem of nursing specialty undergraduates through different paths.
