Snake, is a image which is to be vested with multiple meaning in the every nationality of culture system and literary works. The complicated meaning of snake images is also volatile in the course of humun culture and literary. Since 20th century, the new usage of snake images bring about rethinking with modern cultures. But it is still obscure about implication tension of snake images. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the reason and the significance of the implication tension by researching 20th century some works which used snake images. The main body of this thesis consists of three parts:Part One through reading texts to analysis of the the representation of the snake images implication tension in some contemporary western novels. First, probes into the tension to discuss the new characteristics of snake images in 20th century. After, analyze the snake images implication contradictions in the novels. In the last, with the analysis of snake images of several type, survey tension of the cultural connotations of snake images .Part Two discuss with various symbolic meanings in both western literary history and cultural history and analyze these reasons for the evolution of snake images. Snake images have been referred to very often in both western cultural and literary history, especially in the ancient myths and legends. Form ancient to modern, their symbolic meanings are features of extensive,complexity and rheological. These reasons of evolution can be description from three main headings such as main sense,religious development,man and nature.Part three revealed historical and cultural connotation and philosophical connotation of the implication tension of snake images. We find the research is still insufficiency only on self-discipline and the heteronomy point of view. So, from a higher level, we use a macro-perspective of " modernity criticism " to analysis of snake images implication tension. This implication tension is embodied in human self-reflection for the cultural paradox.
