Brahms is one of the great composers of the romantic period. Although he is a classicist and advocates "absolute music", among his creative practice of instrumental music, including many works that are not without the ideological content and indeed with programmatic nature. In his instrumental works, Brahms has been often revealing the programme content by means of textual adjuncts, poetry citation and folk-song quotation etc. In this paper, the writer tries to make a detailed study of Brahms piano sonata, and discuss the programmatic implication in each piano sonata. Through making a specific analysis of musical structure, melody, tonality and texture combined with the texts of poetry or song, so as to explore internal relationship between them, finding the elements why the programmatic implication exist and see how Brahms conveys poetic idea and musical implication through unique art techniques.
