Erhu, an instrument that was originally used to accompany other instruments in the court music and now has become the famous solo instrument, has experienced a long way of development. And Liu Tianhua has made a great contribution to it, such as he introduced this instrument (also called the Begger's instrument) to the college, specialized it, as well as composed a lot of etudes and famous works. He formed his own performing style. Ah Bing is a folk artist, and has composed the famous The Moon Reflected in the Second Spring. But his performing style is absolutely different form Liu's. This article analyzes their composing and performing styles, and compares them as well. Besides, it also analyzes some Erhu works composed by the later generations, and their contributions to the style's development.This article is composed of three parts, that is, the introduction, the text, and the conclusion. The introduction part illustrates the Erhu's developing history. The text part contains three chapters, the first of which is most important, and is divided into three sections. Section one discusses mainly Liu Tianhua's composing technique and performing style. Treating his improvements to this instrument as the point of entry, the author analyzes some difficult works, and also generalizes the performing styles; Section two, through discussing Ah Bing's background, composing character, as well as his technique characteristics to discuss his performing style. Section three, the author compared Liu and Ah Bing's performing styles through their living background, living place, religious element, composing motive, tones and thoughts. Chapter two elaborates the development of Erhu through the significant representatives' works and performs, such as that of Jiang Fengzhi and Lu Xiutang. Chapter three illustrates the innovation reflected in the recent composed works, such as North Henan Ballade, Sanmen Gorge Rhapsody composed by Liu Wenjin, as well as the three rhapsodies composed by Wang Jianmin. The inclusion summarizes this instrument's status and the author's hope as well.
