"Concerto" as one of the Western symphony genres, creates the "Chinese style" concept after integrating with Chinese traditional instrument. The composer adopts the performance style that one Chinese traditional instrument to play with the Chinese traditional orchestra or the western orchestra, refers to the western composition technique and Chinese traditional musical elements, completely present the characteristics such as melody, harmony, polyphonic, tone-colour, performing techniques, cadenza between solo and concert parts. It significantly enriches the musical piece' presentation method and expression content. During half a century development, Chinese Orchestral Concerto composition has drawing more and more attentions and along the increasing number of work piece, the composition technique and style becoming more matured and varied all the time. Chinese traditional instrument Concerto has more composition skills and opened vision with increasing powerful influence.This dissertation attempts to analyze and study the Chinese Orchestral Concerto composition techniques through representative Chinese Orchestral Concerto pieces in different decades. There will be three chapters. First chapter, through the description about the Chinese Orchestral Concerto origin, presentation method and the relationship with Chinese traditional orchestra, illustrate the Chinese Orchestral Concerto's composition development from 1950'sand 1960's till nowadays. Second chapter, through the study of three representative Chinese Orchestral Concerto pieces from 1970's, demonstrate the practice of traditional music language in these Chinese Orchestral Concerto through their theme, melody tone-colour, special tone language, harmony, polyphonic skills, formal structures, cooperation between solo performing instrument and orchestra. Third chapter, choose four most influential Chinese Orchestral Concerto from 1990's, study the various development of modern music language composition skills in Chinese Orchestral Concerto through the analysis of tone-colour's attempt and explore in work piece structure, tessitura and new music source. Based on the above analysis and demonstration, it proposes the music principal as "commonness" and "individuality" in Chinese Orchestral Concerto, and the perspective about the transition from traditional music to modern music. It highly appreciates the value and standing of the seven Chinese Orchestral Concerto work pieces that discussed in this dissertation.
