Since Julia Kristeva put forward the concept of intertextuality in the late 1960s, the intertextual theory has become a hot issue both in literary and translation studies. It offers a new method to interpret text and shows a new way for translation. Many researchers made valuable exploration in the field of translation from the point of intertextuality. This thesis attempts to explore intertextuality theory's application in the translation of tourist materials, and study intertextuality and its translation method in tourist materials. Specifically, the thesis gives a research on the following intertextuality, including allusion, well-known saying, poem, literary work, celebrity, quotation and cliche in the tourist material. All these can be considered as intertextual signals. The thesis first reviews the intertextuality theory's concept, typology and form, then elaborates the relationship between intertextuality and translation. It points out that translation itself is an intertextual activity. The two major stages of translation, understanding of the source text and reproduction of the target text are both intertextual activities. Because intertextuality involves a wide spectrum, the author points out that this thesis mainly discusses the following intertextual signal's translation techniques, including the translation techniques of allusion, well-known saying, poem, literary work, celebrity, quotation and cliche. Then the thesis briefly introduces the tourist material's function and the differences between Chinese and English tourist materials and analyzes the above intertextual phenomenon in them. Through the evaluation of some translation of tourist material, the thesis states that whether considering intertextuality or not greatly affects the quality of translation. Then the thesis disscusses some specific translation techniques of intertextual signals in the tourist materials from the point of intertextuality. Because the intertextual signal includes semiotic aspect and information aspect, when the translation can preserve the corresponding linguistic form of the source text, there are literal translation and literal translation with amplification techniques. When translation can only convey the information of intertextual signals, the following techniques are available: summarization, paraphrasing, rewriting, analogy, deleting, blending. In the end, the author concludes that the translator's sufficient intertextual knowledge plays an important role in enhancing the quality of translation. The translator's intertextual knowledge includes not only his knowledge about the original text itself, but also an understanding of the intertextual knowledge both of the reader of the original text and the reader of the target text. It helps promote the quality of the translation of the tourist material so as to realize successful cultural communicaion and make the tourist material effective.
