The Novels Of Zhang Henshui: Between Tradition And Modernity

In April, 1924, Zhang Henshui published his first novel which caused a sensation called , and he became famous and created more than 100 novels in his whole life,he left more than 30 million words novel works for Modern Chinese Literature, and became one of the most influential writers during the last century from 20's to 40's. As a writer who had profound traditional culture background, zhang cherished and tried to continue many factors of the traditional literature in an era of change, but he didn't reject absorbing some factors of the modern literature, at the same time, he put them into the literature of himself which making creation became the novel style which can communicate the tradition and modern effectively.This paper will use the methods which combine total research and read text to make a more systematic analysis about Zhang's novels reflect the traditional culture and modern consciousness and the integration between the two. Preface recalls the historical process that the research of Zhang's novels from treated in cold to been acceptable, summing up the achievements of Zhang Henshui study and pointing out the lack of blending carding system on the novels reflect the traditional and modern aspects of the complexity in present Zhang Henshui study, which carried out to establish the basic direction of the paper.The body divides three chapters, and explains the efforts which Zhang Henshui fusing of tradition and modernity in the course from the novel type, style and narrative of the novels three aspects. Chapter one focuses on Zhang Henshui's story styles about romance community novels, chivalrous novels, satirical novel, Anti-Japanese War Novels and so on. From all of these types, romance community novels are focus, combining with the works, expanding demonstration from the real integration of "society" and "love", reconstruction the style of "romantic" and "brothel scholars", forming the new "triangle loving mode" three angles. At the same time, this paper arranges to Zhang's chivalrous novels, satirical novel, Anti-Japanese War Novels from the characters of novels, explore topics and creative limitations.Chapter two analysis the style characters of Zhang Henshui's "new chapter novel". The first section takes an analysis from the characters of form about Zhang Henshui's novels' of traditional head back, opening, ending, language and other stylistic features inherited and improved.The second section comparing the difference between Zhang Henshui's novels and traditional novel chapter from the narrative mode of narrator, highlights and narrative time of Zhang Henshui's novel.Chapter three takes an analysis from cultural mentality about the cultural orientation on the dual color between the tradition and modern. One hand he adhered the traditional culture, on the other hand, he didn't rest on its laurels, and consciously absorb some modern ideas. He also found many similar places between the comparing and collision of the traditional culture and modern cultured, made the two things integrating in some way.At last, the conclusion takes an overview about Zhang Henshui attempted integrating traditional and contemporary significance of this literary phenomenon, and explains the existence of a variety of lacks and regrets of this paper in brief.
