Katherine Mansfield is an outstanding short story writer in the early 20th century in Britain. The significance of her short story writing is the extension of the performance field of short story and the innovative use of a variety of narrative strategy. This thesis, based on the interpretation of Mansfield's short stories, will emphasize on discussing the significance of gender politics of the narrative strategy in her short stories. The first chapter will emphasize on discussing the female voice in the narrative mode.In those short stories ,in which the narrator is the character herself, the female narrator "I" shows the characteristics of an"Other",and kept self-silent. The self-silence is a denial to the modelization of women in patriarchal society. In the authorial narrative-mode short stories, the apparent authority helps to ensure the dominant position of the female narrator, in order to project women's voice in the text.In the second chapter, there will be an in-depth study on the observation angle and the image of women. In Mansfield's short stories, the in-stories female observer successfully subvert the traditional male image.Through the out-stories observer's eye,Mansfield gave her comments on the value of two sorts of women, the "angels in the room" and the women indulging in fantasies. In Chapter Three, through the analysis of specific stories,we will recognize that Mansfield was very skilful in the use of different modes of discourse to reflect the political ideas of gender in the text.
