Language is the most important means of human communication, without which it would be impossible to imagine how social activities of human beings could have happened. English, as an international language, has become the dominant medium for communication worldwide. As a result, communication competence, especially speaking ability in English becomes more important than a command of mere grammatical rules or structural analysis. Language should not be an end in itself, but a means of conveying information and feelings about something. More and more people have realized that improving English communication ability will not only offer them greater opportunities, but also better their life and enhance their living standard to a larger extent. However, students'oral communicative competence in Secondary Vocational Schools is even worse. Most students can read the texts and passages in the textbook, but they cannot speak proper English. They only speak few words or sentences in the tasks in class, or the words express the wrong meanings. Some even can not communicate with others in daily life in English, they dare to speak with others. Most students are lack of communicative competence. The purpose of secondary vocational education is to prepare a workforce with the academic and vocational skills needed to compete successful in a world market. And English teaching in secondary vocational schools aims at basic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and stresses the importance of communicative competence by highlighting speaking and listening skills. To cultivate students'oral communicative competence, more and more English teachers have been engaged in or trying the practice and research of task-based approach (TBA).Based on the theoretical studies of communication competence and Task-based language teaching and literature review on oral communication competence, and with the teaching experience of this approach, this paper is intended to make a study of task-based language teaching on the cultivation of students'oral communicative competence in secondary vocational schools. The author also put forward some suggestions on the implementation of this approach, on the basis of measures which are taken during the experimental teaching in EC, and questionnaire which is carried out by EC after the experiment, so as to enhance the teaching efficiency of TBLT.The relevant researches on oral communicative competence both abroad and in China are introduced in Chapter One. In Chapter Two, detailed theoretical analysis of communicative competence, task and task-based language teaching are given in order to interpret the feasibility of TBLT in language teaching and learning theoretically. In Chapter Three, a research is performed to identify the effectiveness of the task-basked language teaching in secondary vocational schools. The research is carried out mainly with the instruments: pre-test, post-test and questionnaire in EC after the experiment. The author gives the experimental class the task-based language teaching, while the controlled class receives the traditional teaching model. After sixteen-week experiment, the examination results indicate that the implementation of TBLT can develop the oral communication competence of the students. Chapter Four, based on the literature review on oral communication competence in Chapter One, the theoretical analysis of communicative competence and TBLT in Chapter Two, and the results of the study in Chapter Three, put forward that TBLT is one of the effective ways of oral English teaching in secondary vocational schools. Moreover, some suggestions of implementing TBLT in secondary vocational schools are put forward: generating learning atmosphere, cultivating students'learning interests, adapting teaching materials, designing interactive activities in various forms, and employing multi-media resources, etc.In the end it summarizes the theoretical and practical significance of TBLT, and points out some pedagogical implications for teachers and students, therefore TBLT is a useful and feasible approach for the students in Secondary Vocational Schools to improve their oral communicative competence.
