With dissemination of modern civilization, English for science and technology (EST) has developed into an important variety of language. It has been playing an important role in scientific and technical communication all over the world. Therefore, it is quite necessary to conduct a systematic research into EST.This thesis approaches EST translation from the perspective of the functionalist theory. It emphasizes the functionality of the target text in the target culture. By means of comparative and contrastive analysis, the thesis discusses how functionalist approaches are applied to EST translation.First, this thesis reviews previous relevant researches on EST and its translation. Next, it investigates the main features of EST from the lexical, syntactic and rhetoric perspectives. Then, it introduces the basic aspects and development of the functionalist theory. Afterwards, it explores and illustrates the major methods and techniques for translation of EST into Chinese target text (CTT). Finally, the thesis analyses the English versions of some EST texts before it concludes that the functionalist theory may serve as an effective guide to translation of EST into Chinese.
