English text learning is a common form of English learning. In recent years, traditional teaching methods are still used in English text teaching, in which the lexical learning and syntactic learning are focused, while the analysis and understanding of the text are ignored, so many learners are lack in reading and expressing skills. Halliday, founder of systemic functional linguistics pointed out that the construction of functional grammar provides a theoretical framework of text analysis. Functional grammar used as text analysis provides an effective approach in language teaching. This thesis mainly focuses on studying the theme theory and thematic progression. Based on theme theory as well as TPP found by domestic and foreign scholars, analysis on the 10 New Horizon English courses is made in detail in this study. Thus, on one hand, the theoretical study of theme and thematic progression is enriched. On the other hand, the theory of theme and thematic progression is demonstrated to guide the teaching of English text effectively. The results of this study show that the theory of theme and thematic progression for the College English Teaching is practicable. It is practically significant to the teaching of reading comprehension and writing and can help students observe consciously, select and use the theme and thematic progression to improve the accuracy of reading and writing consistently. It also has a very important guiding significance to the teaching and learning of learning.
