This thesis aims to explore the reasons for the formation of Hemingway's eco-feminism consciousness by analyzing the social background and Hemingway's personal experience. And to analyze, interpret Hemingway's work Across the River into the Trees based on eco-feminism theory, combined with Hemingway's own ideas. This study will prove that Hemingway was a writer of eco-consciousness and feminism consciousness, he advocated the harmony and equality relationship between man and nature, between men and women. This study is based on the materials I collected and my analysis will operate primarily at a textual level. My use of literary theories will be illustrative and subordinated to the textual analysis.This paper is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, I will give a detailed analysis of the ecofeminism. I will introduce the development of ecofeminism and its main points. In the second chapter, I will explore Hemingway's life experiences and social backgrounds in order to look into the social causes and individual factors that the formation of Hemingway's ecofeminist consciousness. In chapter three, I will probe the relationship between Hemingway and several women who have a profound effect on him and the development of feminism, which will be taken as a basis for analysis of the underlying causes of the formation of Hemingway's positive sensibility of women. In the fourth chapter, I will review the relationship between Hemingway and his father and his close contact with nature in order to explore the reasons for the formation of Hemingway's ecological consciousness. In chapter five, I will prove that far from indifference to women, Hemingway in "cross the river into the trees" reveals a feminist sensibility. To further improve this point, the sweet love between the hero and heroine is interpreted and the mutual-respect male-female relationship is reflected. At the same time, I further explore the Hemingway's disgust on the war and concern the future of mankind and aspiration to establish a harmonious relationship between human and nature, equal relations between men and women. And thus I prove that Hemingway is a writer with the ecofeminist consciousness, his love of nature and respect for women can get evidence in his work Across the River into the Trees.
