Lin Yutang's Cultural Identity As A Translator From The Perspective Of Cross-culture

Lin Yutang spent most of his life in writing and translation of both oriental and western cultures. Aiming at introducing Chinese culture to the West and vice versa, he has fulfilled his commitment as a cultural messenger through a large amount of great works. Besides his translation, he once wrote an essay on translation theories, which describes his multi-dimensional opinions and attitudes towards translation systematically. In that time, there were obviously unique values and superior consciousness in Lin's translation ideas. Therefore, Lin Yutang, a translator of an integration of both translation theories and practice, has provided many themes worthy of studying in the field of translation.The introduction of cultural studies has injected new life and energy into the academic area of translation studies. Not only have the boundaries of translation studies been pushed back, but also more diversified perspectives of research have been explored, which makes it possible to carry out more comprehensive and objective researches in the field through new channels. In recent years, studying translation from the cultural point of view has become a new trend in the field and naturally cultural inclination in translation studies is closely connected with translators. Therefore, elements like translators'cultural identity and cultural inclination are increasingly attracting researchers'attention. Born from the oriental culture, Lin Yutang has profound knowledge of his mother culture and finds it impossible to break away from it; meanwhile, he received his initial education in a Christian family, mainly from Lin's father, and he then lived in western countries, mostly in America, for nearly 30 years, which obviously endowed him with a background of western culture. Owing to his unusual dual-cultural identity, Lin Yutang has profound understanding of both eastern and western cultures. Lin's cultural identity, together with the practical inequality and imbalance between the East and the West, shaped his complicated cultural stand.The major aim of the study is to start from Lin Yutang's cultural identity and to further explore origins and causes hidden behind his complicated and paradoxical cultural inclination through analyzing Lin's dual-cultural inclination and cultural identity. Then by connecting his cultural inclination and translation, the study is to observe his translation between English and Chinese and to analyze how his cultural inclination has influenced his translation attitudes and translation strategies at different angles.
