Chinese Nation, with long historical and cultural traditions, has a brilliant and refulgent past which could mainly be seen and judged by the characters which are handed down from generation to generation. Belonging to one of the three oldest character systems in the world, Chinese characters are used by the largest number of people. Chinese characters symbolize the unity of the country and the nation. They have written the 5000 years'civilization history of Chinese Nation, bearing the weight of brilliant Chinese culture and representing the crystallization of Chinese Nation's wisdom. And among of these, the human meaning of the word reflects the ancients'knowledge. The paper takes Shuowen Jiezi as the object (the title is short for Shuowen in the following parts) Through careful comparison and the examination of ancient's academic achievements, the word of each part of body names is identified. And then verification and explanation is carried out according to the reasonable classification of the human body parts. Comparing with Oracle and Bronze and combining the different viewpoints of generations, we can come to a conclusion to original meanings of pictographs, associative compounds and self-explanatory characters. On pictophonetic Characters, the author tries his best to collect most of the pictophonetic characters which have the same phonetic signs, and then finds out whether these characters have relationships with their phonetic signs in meaning. At last, these words are compared, analyzed and calculated with the modern Chinese vocabularies and try to observe whether it has been replaced in modern Chinese, the reasons why such changes are occurred will be simply illustrated.The thesis consists of 5 parts:Introduction: this part discusses the purpose and tasks of this study, literature reviews, theoretical foundation and methods of the research.Chapter 1: the definition and concrete classifications of the human meaning of the words in Shuowen. Chapter 2: This part divides into six subsections."Body"Semantic field,"Head"Semantic field,"Neck"Semantic field,"Upperlimb"Semantic field,"Trunking"Semantic field,"Lowerlimb"Semantic field, and examining its original meaning, the source of meaning, and transferred meaning etc.Chapter3: Categorizing and making those words in order according to the theory of"Liushu". Compared with the modern Chinese, the author looks at the situation whether those has been replaced in modern Chinese.Conclusion: Summing up the course of the study of this paper, and pointing out the weakness and aspects that need to be searched more deeply.The thesis has the following characteristics and significance. Firstly, the paper takes ShuowenJiezi as the object. Through careful comparison and reference forerunners of research results, categorizing them in the field of human meaning of the word. Secondly, identifying the graphemes that have explained wrong in ShuowenJiezi, the author researches textually the ancient graphemes before ShuowenJiezi, and discusses the different viewpoints of generations. Thirdly, this paper comes up with 151 words in total on the human meaning, and examining their meaning in terms of the reasonable classifications of semantic field and Liushu. Comparing with the modern Chinese, the author looks at the situation that has been replaced in modern Chinese. Fourthly, detailed research through specific materials that has been proved for the study of Ancient Chinese Vocabulary.
